World Through My Eyes 2022-09-01 Chinese Garden at the Huntington Library

It had been hot for over a week in Southern California in late August 2022.  It was approaching or over one-hundred degrees Fahrenheit so it was almost empty in the Huntington Library. Seeing the lotus flowers, water lilies in the lake and green willows by the lake in the Chinese garden, they made me feel cooler. (press/click post title/picture to read it)

Plant: Cyphostemma juttae 葡萄甕

Wild grape, Tree Grape or Namibian Grape (Cyphostemma juttae) is a rare succulent ornamental tree from Namibia in southwest Africa. When I walked in the desert garden in the Huntington library, I was attracted by Its heavy swollen main stems and showy grape-like bunches of berries.  (press/click post title/picture to read it)

Plant: Citrus Limon ‘Sungold’

Walking on a path in the Huntington Library, I suddenly saw this fruit that was neither yellow nor green and one end was pointed and the other end was round. (press/click post title/picture to read it)

Plant: Red Spider Lily 石蒜

After reading several articles about Red spider lily (Lycoris radiata) in Chinese and English, I found that this plant has many common names in both Chinese and English. (press/click post title/picture to read it)

Plant: Evergreen Wisteria 老荊藤

It seems that in early September (2020, 2022) I would notice the blooming Evergreen Wisteria on the edge of the Rose Garden in the Huntington Library. Despite its common name, plant is not related to the Chinese Wisteria (Wisteria sinensis). (press/click post title/picture to read it)

Plant: Hops 蛇麻

I saw this tall hops (Humulus lupulus) in the herbal garden of the Huntington Library. It is native to Europe, southwestern Asia and North America. (press/click post title/picture to read it)

Plant: Water Lily 睡蓮 2

Water lilies (Nymphaea) and Lotus (Nelumbo) are jewels of the aquatic world. Many people can't tell them apart. The biggest difference is that water lilies (Nymphaea species) leaves and flowers both float on the water’s surface while lotus (Nelumbo species) leaves and flowers are emergent, or rise above the water’s surface. Plant: Flax

I have eaten flaxseed, heard about flaxseed oil and wear linen clothes but I have no idea what a flax plant looks like.  When I saw it in the Huntington Library, I was very excited. (press/click post title/picture to read it)

Plant: Echinopsis 2

Echinopsis is a large genus of cacti native to South America. It is also known as hedgehog cactus, sea-urchin cactus or Easter lily cactus. They are remarkable for the beauty of their flowers. (press/click post title/picture to read it)

Plant: Echinocereus Cinerascens

The Huntington Desert Garden is one of the largest and oldest assemblages of cacti and other succulents in the world. The bright pink flowers in the pictures are Echinocereus cinerascens. It is native to Central Mexico. (press/click post title/picture to read it)
