Travel/POI – US Cross Country 4 (Day 3)

Before leaving Santa Fe, we stopped by Meow Wolf’s House of Eternal Return where an arts production company provides mind-bending and explorable art experience to all ages.  Although we knew the place won’t be open, we just wanted to check out some sculptures outside. It was a long 520 miles drive day to reach Yukon, Oklahoma so we didn’t stay too long.

From Santa Fe, we drove about 208 miles to reach Texas. Texas is the second-largest U.S. state by both area (after Alaska) and population (after California). Texas is nicknamed the Lone Star State for its former status as an independent republic, and as a reminder of the state’s struggle for independence from Mexico. The Lone Star can be found on the Texas state flag and on the Texas state seal. The origin of Texas’s name is from the Caddo word táyshaʼ meaning ‘friends’. Texas leads the nation in the production of cattle, horses, sheep, goats, wool, mohair and hay. It also leads the nation in production of cotton which is the number one crop grown in the state in terms of value. No wonder we saw several cotton fields along the way. We ate lunch at Spicy Mike’s Bar-B-Q Haven in Amarillo. We had Mikey’s Mess (chopped beef with Frito, beans and cheese). I never had it before and it was quite delicious. On the road in Texas, we saw many windmills, and also saw an oversized cross and the Leaning Tower of Britten in Groom.
我們吃了 Mikey’s Mess(碎牛肉配 Frito、豆子和起司)。

From Amarillo, Texas, we drove another 110 miles to reach Oklahoma. The state’s name is derived from the Choctaw words okla, ‘people’ and humma, which translates as ‘red’. It is also known informally by its nickname, “The Sooner State”. The term dates back to 1889 when the Indian Territory was opened to settlers. Thousands of people lined up on the border and, when the signal was given, they raced into the territory to claim their land. Some people went in early to claim their land. They became known as Sooners. We stayed at Fairfield Inn & Suites Oklahoma City Yukon. It is convenient to access many restaurants.
